چکیده

A laboratorial study was carried out to investigate the effect of NaCl priming on seed germination and seedling growth of canola. Canola seeds were primed with 1% NaCl solution for 24 hours, at 20°C. Then primed and non-primed seeds were irrigated with seven different saline solutions consisted of 0 (control), 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50% concentrations of NaCl. Results indicated that NaCl priming increased germination percentage, germination rate and seedling dry weight 25.57, 34.67 and 36.67 %, respectively, as compared with non-primed seeds. Overall increased NaCl level, led to the reductions in the traits under study but these reductions were higher for non-primed compared to primed seeds. At the 1.25% level of salinity, the reductions for germination percentage, germination rate and seedling dry weight were 36.30, 39.52 and 50% for primed and 69.47, 89.92 and 87.5% for non-primed seeds respectively, as compared with control. However, at 1.50% level of salinity non-primed seeds failed to germinate, while, germination percentage was 45% for primed seeds. The present study revealed that under salinity condition, seed priming with NaCl could be used as a method for improving seed performance in canola. However, further studies are needed to investigate the effects of NaCl priming on later growth and development stages of this crop.

Seed priming, as a low-cost method, is a technique commonly used to increase germination percentage especially under unfavorable conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of bio-priming on the germination of canola (Brassica napus L.) seeds under saline (NaCl) conditions. Seeds of canola var. Hyola 401 were inoculated with plant growth-promoting microorganism (PGPM) in...

EFFECTS OF NaCl TREATMENTS ON SEED GERMINATION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF CANOLA (BRASSICA NAPUS L.) CULTIVARS

Effects of salt stress on germination, seedling growth and activity of antioxidant enzymes in leaves of six cultivars of canola (Brassica napus L.) were investigated on two F1 hybrids (Hyola401, Hyola330) and four open pollinated cultivars (Zarfam, Okapi, RGs003 and Sarigol). Seeds were germinated under various levels of salinity (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM NaCl solutions). An increase in NaCl ...

Effect of Nanoscale Titanium Dioxide Particles on the Germination and Growth of Canola (Brassica napus)

An investigation was initiated to examine the effects of nanoscale titanium dioxide particles on plant growth and development. In view of the widespread cultivation of canola in Iran and in other parts of the globe and in view of the potential influence of titanium on its growth, this plant was chosen as the model system. Canola seeds were separately treated with different concentrations of nan...

The effect of exogenous silicon on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat cultivars under salt stress conditions

ABSTRACT- Seed germination and early seedling growth are critical stages for plants establishment and production, particularly under salinity conditions. Exogenous application of silicon (Si) can enhance germination as well as seedling growth. In this experiment, the effect of priming with Si (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 mM sodium silicate) on seed germination and seedling growth under NaCl (0, 100 a...

Inducing Salt Tolerance in Canola (brassica Napus L.) by Exogenous Application of Glycinebetaine and Proline: Response at the Initial Growth Stages

In order to assess whether exogenous application of glycinebetaine and proline could induce salt tolerance in canola, two canola cultivars Dunkled (salt tolerant) and Cyclone (salt sensitive) were allowed to germinate and grow at 0, and 120 mM NaCl for two weeks. Varying concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 5 mM) of glycinebetaine (GB) or proline were applied through the rooting medium to non-str...
